– One man is in custody after barricading himself inside a home on Detroit’s east side and setting the home on fire.

Police say two suspects entered a home on the 700 block of Conner in an attempted armed robbery. Officers responded to the scene to find the suspects had taken a family hostage

The suspects were barricaded for an hour while police attempted negotiations. Police say the suspects then set the home on fire to create a diversion and escape.

The mother and father escaped, while the children — ages 2 and 4 years old — were left inside.

One suspect tried to run away, and Commander Elvin Barren of the Detroit Police Department was able to apprehend him. The second suspect is believed to have escaped.

Fire and EMS were able to control the fire and rescue the children, who were taken to a nearby hospital. The 2-year-old is in critical condition from smoke inhalation, but both children are expected to survive.
