Police say seven officers have been injured as protests have escalated into violence on the streets of Baltimore.
Numerous officers in riot gear responded to the area near Mondawmin Mall Monday afternoon as groups of people have been throwing bricks, rocks and other items at the officers.
Baltimore Police Capt. Eric Kowalczyk said one officer was unresponsive and other officers suffered broken bones from being pelted by items thrown at them.
Police say the injured officers have been moved out of the area and are receiving medical treatment.
“They attacked officers without provocation, they have no regard for the safety of the people who live in that community, and our officers are working hard to bring about order,” said Capt. Kowalczyk.
Police say several police cars have been damaged and officers are using fire extinguishers to put out small fires in the area. One police cruiser was set on fire at North Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue.
Stores have also been looted during the violence and confrontations in the area.
