The gunman who fatally ambushed two police officers in their squad car had a long criminal record, a hatred for police and the government and an apparent history of mental instability that included an attempt to hang himself a year ago, authorities said Sunday.

According to Associate Press, Ismaaiyl Brinsley 28 has been arrested 15 times in Georgia, and four in Ohio for assorted crimes, Boyce said. In posts on social media, the gunman expressed anger against the United States government at himself, Boyce added.

Officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos were working overtime as part of an anti-terrorism drill in Bedford-Stuyvesant just before 3 p.m. when they were shot point-blank in the head.

The silver handgun used in Saturday’s shooting in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood was bought at a pawn shop in Georgia in 1996 and authorities are now working with the ATF to determine how it ended up in Brinsley’s hands.

Prior to arriving in New York on Saturday, Brimsley had shot and wounded his ex-girlfriend at an apartment complex in Owings Mills early in the morning, authorities in Baltimore County, Md. said.
