History was made with the Supreme Court decision to strike down certain provisions in defense of marriage (DOMA). The court cleared the way for states that allow gay marriages to pay federal benefits to married couples. The court also overturned Prop 8 allowing gays to marry in California.
President Obama praised the Supreme Court decision and has no plans to force religious institutions to hold gay marriages. In a statement, his says “How religious institutions define an consecrate marriage has always been up to those institutions. Nothing about this decision – applies only to civil marriage.”
