Diabetes is a disease affecting the African-American community. I am one of the 3.7 million African-Americans living with diabetes. I have type 2 diabetes I now; I have to check my blood sugar regularly. I bake or grill my foods and exercise at least four days a week. Diabetes can be a killing disease, we can control it, by keeping fit, eating right and regular exercise can decrease our risk for diabetes quite substantially. It is the fourth –leading cause of death by disease among African-Americans and is the leading cause of blindness, kidney failure, heart disease, stroke and amputation. 14.7 percent of all Americans aged 20 years or older have diabetes. There are two types of diabetes type 1 and 2. Type 1 is and autoimmune disease in which the body does not produce any insulin. Type 2 is the most common, a metabolic disorder resulting from the body’s inability to make enough. Most important if you’re dealing with diabetes learn to read food labels when making your food choices. Reading the labels will ensure you do not take in too much fat or sugar. Stay Healthy!!!
